Bio Innovation Challenge

The Seed Innovation Challenge 2023 was also a major success for the Agro Innovation Lab. The goal of this challenge was to promote sustainable seed production in collaboration with the RWA Seed sector.

High-quality seeds form the basis of food supply. The Seed Innovation Days on November 16th and 17th, 2023, in Korneuburg focused on how seed production can work sustainably and efficiently in the future.

Diverse solutions from around the world
65 startups and innovators from 24 countries applied for the Seed Innovation Challenge 2023 by Agro Innovation Lab and RWA Raiffeisen Ware Austria. Solutions were sought in the areas of breeding, portfolio management, field production/seed multiplication, factory production/seed processing, distribution/logistics, quality management/laboratory.

12 finalists were invited to present their solutions in the jury’s final. The showcased solutions offer a wide range of innovations: from measuring pollen cells and using high-tech sensors for field performance, to the comprehensive use of AI solutions for seed planning and processing, as well as highly technical sowing and measurement methods, and the use of nanoparticles, 3D measurements, and plasma technology.

Unique format for the future of the seed industry
Florian Mayer, Director of the Seeds Division at RWA, stated, “The challenges posed by climate change are enormous. The seed industry must remain innovative. With the Seed Innovation Challenge, we are taking an important step and creating an international platform for sustainable solutions in seed production. The goal is to ensure high quality and yield in the long term and to disseminate ideas widely.”

The keynote on the future of seed innovations in Europe was delivered by Euroseeds CEO Garlich von Essen. He emphasized the importance of involving the public in the journey through the basic processes of agriculture and explaining how innovative ideas ensure the foundation of our nutrition. “The Seed Innovation Challenge shows how easily innovative methods can be integrated into existing agricultural systems and quickly bring benefits.”
